In 1898, Norwegian explorer Otto Sverdrup took the vesterveg, or "westward way", to chart, explore and study North America's northernmost lands. When Sverdrup and his crewmen returned to Norway four years later, they had charted some 260,000 square kilometres of the Canadian Arctic – more than any other polar explorer in history. As a testament to Sverdrup's successful journey, many islands and waterways within this region bear Norwegian names. Canada Post is pleased to join with the postal administrations of Norway and Greenland in issuing stamps honouring the 150th anniversary of the birth of famed explorer Otto Sverdrup. Canada's 49c domestic-rate stamp and $1.40 international-rate souvenir sheet will be on sale at Canadian post offices as of March 26.
